It’s the 1st October today and I have seen quite a few posts like these on various social media platforms this morning and figured it would be a good idea to try and do one myself and share my personal goals for this month.
Everyone always says that goals become more attainable once written down and it can make you become more accountable. I encourage people to always set themselves SMART goals, ie Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic and Time Framed. Research suggests that setting challenging and specific goals can lead to better performance and achievement. For example, setting a goal of simply drinking more water every day; can be improved to ‘I will drink 3 litres of water every day this month.’ You have now set yourself a specific target to reach each day and therefore you are more likely to hold yourself accountable to achieve this. Another example of a SMART goal would be ‘I want to lose 1lb of weight a week for the next four weeks,’ this objective would benefit somebody much more in the long run than just saying ‘I want to lose weight.’
So here are my goals for October:
- Read a chapter of a book every day.
I used to read all the time, and on holiday you will usually find me on my sunbed with Kindle in hand but as soon as I set foot on the plane home, it goes back into hiding until the next trip. This month I want to start reading again, whether that is an educational book on nutrition, well being or fitness; or just simply some chick lit to chill out with and switch off at the end of the day.
- Get outside more. I will take a walk outside at least twice a week for at least 20minutes.
When I helped to run bootcamps on a morning, it was a ritual of mine to go for a long walk of about 30-40minutes before we started (even at 5am!!) to not only wake me up for the session but it also gave me chance to listen to podcasts and get my learn on. I loved being up and about at that time as it was so quiet and peaceful. I am lucky enough to live by the sea so would walk around the headland on a morning and enjoy the view and sunrise. People underestimate how beneficial just getting out outside in the fresh air and going for a walk can be, and I have fallen into this trap recently. This month I will switch up a few of my indoor cardio sessions for a walk outside, or I will try and walk to the gym instead of taking the car on occasion.
- Deadlift 115kg by the end of October.
This one doesn’t take much explaining! I want to get stronger this month, and after achieving a 105kg deadlift with little preparation at the beginning of this week, I feel like this new target is certainly achievable with the correct training in this timeframe.
